Grow your career at Mill Lane Garden Centre

Get on the right track for a job in horticulture. Mill Lane can offer you a flexible training for work package that will teach you how to:

  • Grow plants, herbs and vegetables
  • Make gardens look great
  • Use tools and equipment safely
  • Serve customers

A typical training programme lasts for two years but we can work with you to design a programme that's right for you. It may be that you need more time than this to complete all the parts of the training programme or you may progress more quickly than this. You can also choose how many days a week you'd like to train. Whatever you need, we can work around you.

Get qualified to work

You will get a programme that is right for you and helps you to get the skills you need to start work. You'll get qualifications, practical experience and as much support as you need. You'll have your own keyworker and will use our Qualified to Work pack. This is a system that shows you how well you are learning.

We offer qualifications that employers like to see including:

  • NPTC in Horticulture (A Skills for Working Life course : Entry Levels 2 & 3)
  • NVQ1 Customer Service
  • Health & Safety at Work certificate

Mill Lane trainees can also complete other short courses at our Employment & Learning Centre including:

  • Manual Handling
  • Basic First Aid

As part of our qualification training we work with another organisation called the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers. BTCV run many volunteering programmes if you would like to get even more experience!

Learning about work life

Learning important skills for work is essential for getting a job. At Mill Lane, you'll learn about teamwork, dealing with customers, and personal presentation. You will make new relationships with other people at the garden centre and will learn about the responsibilities you will have if you decide to get a paid job after your training.

Tracking your progress

All the way through your training, we will talk about and plan what you want to do next. At the end of your programme you will get support from a Camden Society Employment Advisor to think about getting a job or moving onto further training.

Train at our Employment & Learning Centre

Our gardening training programme is linked to our Employment & Learning Centre. Here, you will be able to join other people to complete your training courses. All our courses are flexible and you will be able train using multi-media facilities and accessible learning materials. You can even have your own learning buddy if you need support during training days.
