Police response to disability hate crime 'patchy and inconsistent' says Mencap report

Launching a three-year campaign to ensure that disability hate crime is treated as seriously as crimes like racism and homophobia, Mencap has also released a new research report, Don't Stand By.

As part of Learning Disability Week running from 20-26 June, the report highlights police failures to conduct thorough investigations of crimes against people with learning disabilities - download it here - and kick starts the campaign Stand By Me which aims to get this serious and disturbing issue the focus it deserves.

Read the Guardian's coverage of the campaign launch (including a case study from Keith Shortman, a Camden Society Trustee) and find out more about Mencap's aims for improvements in policing disability hate crime.
